Sometimes, the initial call to therapy is sudden, such as a personal loss, trauma, or trouble in a relationship. Sometimes it is a persistent feeling of discomfort or distress that has been quietly with us for a long time. As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience, I help adults, couples, and adolescents unravel and transform the patterns that may no longer serve them, paving the way toward greater insight, growth, and fulfillment.

Over the course of our lives, we all cultivate ways of relating that help us navigate the challenges of school, work, love, and family. It’s natural that as we evolve, we might outgrow behaviors that once helped us feel safe and stable — but it can also be hard to clearly see and let go of repetitive patterns that keep us stuck. This is where the tools of psychotherapy shine. Using a creative, open, and collaborative process, I strive to help my clients illuminate underlying, sometimes complex behaviors that might fuel depression, anger, self-esteem issues, PTSD, or relationship struggles. Sometimes the process takes us to unexpected places, and often it reaches into the past. Ultimately, I hope to give clients a sense of agency over their emotions, relationships, and life’s inevitable transitions. When our inner lives and unique experiences are explored, we can move more freely and fully through the world.

About Amy

I’m a licensed independent clinical social worker with over 25 years of clinical experience in psychotherapy. Through my private practice in Norwich, Vt., I help adults, couples, and adolescents identify, understand, and transform patterns and behaviors that work counter to their goals. I work with clients both in person and virtually.

Long before becoming a psychotherapist, I was interested in the workings of the mind, and felt the call to be in a helping profession. After traveling and working abroad, I earned my Masters of Social Work degree at Smith College School for Social Work and my certification as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist from the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI).

I’ve taught at the Smith College School for Social Work, as an adjunct clinical instructor in psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, and on the psychotherapy faculty at BPSI. I serve on a national committee for psychotherapy education for the American Psychoanalytic Association. At BPSI, I also co-chair the annual Alan Pollack Psychotherapy Conference on the Nature of Transference and serve on both the Board of Trustees and the Committee for Ethical and Professional Standards. In addition to psychotherapy, I provide consultations, assessments, and clinical supervision to other area clinicians.
